Celebrating Veteran’s by Volunteering in the Community

BTYR - Twin Cities HFH logoI wanted to reach out and let you know about something Twin Cities Habitat is doing for Veteran’s Day.

Coming up to Veteran’s Day, I wanted to let you know about a special build on November 11th. We’ve set aside 3 different sites throughout the metro area (Blaine, St. Paul, and Shakopee) to give an opportunity to the community to honor and celebrate Veteran’s Day and our Yellow Ribbon Initiative through home building.

I wondered if you could get the word out to the folks in your networks about this unique opportunity? Below is more information about the days and how to sign up to send out to your community:

Celebrate and honor our nation’s service members by helping build a Habitat house on Veterans’ Day. http://volunteer.tchabitat.org/HOC__Volunteer_Opportunity_Details_Page?id=a1Cd000000JqTwf

We have opportunities to get involved in Blaine, St. Paul, and Shakopee. Recognizing that Veterans are disproportionately affected by housing challenges, Twin Cities Habitat launched this initiative in 2012 and soon earned Yellow Ribbon accreditation. In the past three years, Twin Cities Habitat volunteers, working through A Brush with Kindness, have helped repair the homes of 34 Veterans and their families. In that same timeframe, five local Veteran families have completed the Homeownership Program and purchased Twin Cities Habitat homes.

To sign up to volunteer, please register for an account at volunteer.tchabitat.org . Click on “Find an Opportunity” on the left and then the “Opportunity Calendar.” Scroll down to November 11th and click on a Veterans’ Build project. If you have any questions please contact Anne Meyers-Welsch at volunteer@tchabitat.org   or 612-305-7114.

VA Retail Immunization Care Coordination Program

PBYR flu shotVA and Walgreens are national partners, providing no-cost flu shots to enrolled Veterans of the VA health care system. From August 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016, enrolled Veteran patients nationwide have the option of getting their flu shot at any of Walgreens’ 8,000 locations in addition to their local VA health care facilities.

Walgreens has the capability to electronically send vaccination information to the VA electronic health record (EHR).  The VA-Walgreens national partnership is part of VA’s eHealth Exchange project. Last year’s national pilot program ensured that many Veterans got their no-cost flu shot at their local Walgreens, satisfying their wellness reminder because they either found it more convenient or did not have a scheduled appointment at a local VA health care facility.
