Heinzen-Ditter Celebrates PBYR, Home Depot and Volunteers!

On June 7, 2019,  Jennifer, Dean and I attended a dinner celebration at the VFW regarding individuals and organizations that helped make their recent restroom renovation project a success. The completed project looks great and will help Veterans and their families for many years into the future, especially those with mobility issues due to service injury illnesses and aging.

During the celebration, PBYR  presented a plaque to Commander Jim Heimerl in honor of his lifelong dedication to community service.  His quiet Dignity and Courage is an inspiration to all!

Gary was able to highlight the PBYR-VFW partnership since 2011:

  • The VFW helped with a steering committee for PBYR, even before PBYR was operational
  • The VFW has had continued presence on the PBYR Board since 2012
  • The VFW is the mail address for PBYR
  • The PBYR-VFW have partnered and shared tables at Home Depot Programs and other programs
  • PBYR-VFW Partnered with purchase of American Dream Oak – a living part of the Plymouth Veterans Memorial
  • The VFW  helped PBYR achieve 501(c)3 status
  • PBYR-VFW have partnered  with programs for Memorial Day  and Veterans Day

It was an honor for PBYR to attend the celebratory dinner and participate in this remodeling project.  PBYR looks forward for the PBYR-VFW partnership to continue and grow with the passage of time.  Also, I must note that their prime rib was 12 on a 10 point scale!

PBYR makes $5000 donation to VFW

The Heinzen-Ditter VFW is remodeling their restrooms to make them ADA compliant and to deal with the age, mobility problems and disabilities experienced by elderly Veterans.

PBYR will assist the VFW with monetary support for this project. If anyone with construction experience that would like to further donate some time and expertise  to assist the VFW with this project,  please coordinate directly with Bernie Stein.

Bernie  and I have reviewed costs and material. All were expertly put together as Bernie has significant experience with managing engineering projects.  Bernie is a West Point grad and currently serves as the VFW’s quartermaster.   This project includes 3 restrooms: men, women and family — all meeting ADA guidelines.

Home Depot has contributed $3000 to date and it is unknown whether they will contribute more.  Some of the estimated  costs may be increased or reduced due to Home Depot’s military discount applies to some items and not others.  I reviewed  the paperwork and plans and believe this project is a go from all perspectives.  The following is the plan :

PBYR makes an immediate $5000.00 donation to the VFW. PBYR will review the additional amount needed for the project as construction progresses with Bernie and give another donation after clarification of final costs and Home Depot’s total grant contribution and discount.

PBYR will present a Plaque to be displayed at the VFW after all construction is completed. Gary will coordinate with Sun Sailor as needed as they  want a picture of PBYR presenting  the  plaque.

This project meets the mission of PBYR and  will help Veterans for many years.  PBYR would not have been able to help without the yearly support and trust of the Plymouth Lions!!  Hug a Lion if you see one!!

Home Depot and Lowe’s Offer Military Discounts

I received an email on another discount that is offered to military members from Home Depot and Lowe’s. Please read below as to the details for receiving 10% off your purchases. Some exclusions also apply. While I was verifying the requirements, I also came across a site on the Home Depot page that lists some of the wonderful things they have done for our military members and families.

What: Home Depot/Lowe’s Military Discounts

PBYR - Home Depot logo**Home Depot Military/Veteran Discount Policy

They offer a 10 percent discount, up to a $500 maximum, to all active, reserve, retired or disabled veterans and their family members with a valid military ID, every day of the week.

All other military veterans qualify for a 10 percent discount during Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Independence Day.

lowes_logo_pms_280**Lowe’s Military/Veteran Discount Policy

They offer an all day, every day 10 percent discount to all military personnel who are active, reserve, retired or disabled veterans and their family members, with a valid, government-issued military ID card.

All other military veterans will receive the discount on the Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day weekends.

But please remember when asking about the discount, if the employee does not understand, do not make a big deal out of it. Ask to speak with the manager, and have your ID with you. And it must be a valid Government issued ID. It seems sometimes the employees get confused as to which policy a person falls under, which is understandable if they never served. So please be patient and courteous when asking about the discount.

Remember if you are a Veteran, but not Active, Reserve, Retired or disabled Veteran you are only authorized the discount on the above stated Holidays.

If you Are Active, Reserve, Retired, or a Disabled Veteran with a valid ID you can get the discount any day of the week.

PBYR partners with Home Depot for Military Appreciation Day event

PBYR - Home Depot logoOn Saturday, July 23, 2016 Kersten & I participated at the Military Appreciation Day Event at Home Depot. Kersten’s efforts were again greatly appreciated, especially as the sky was very dark with an impending thunderstorm when we arrived!!!

We raised $39 but more importantly we were able to thank many veterans for their service, alert them about www.PBYR.org and demonstrate partnering support with Home Depot. Sue was very nice and helped with our booth, chairs and related event details and these efforts were appreciated. The Veterans we talked with said they really enjoy Home Depot’s efforts with Military Appreciation Day and many come to this year after year.

PBYR always enjoys partnering with Home Depot—a very good business community neighbor!! The pictures from this event will be placed on PBYR.org when they arrive from Home Depot.

Oh! Don’t forget the Home Depot Military/Veteran Discount Policy, they offer a 10 percent discount, up to a $500 maximum, to all active, reserve, retired or disabled veterans and their family members with a valid military ID, every day of the week. All other military veterans qualify for a 10 percent discount during Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Independence Day.

Have a beautiful day!!

Plymouth Home Depot hosts Veteran’s Appreciation Day

On November 14, 2015 PBYR and the Heinzen-Ditter VFW shared a table at the Plymouth Home Depot Store for Veteran’s Appreciation Day.  Many of the Vets told me that they came to Home Depot just for this celebration—not to obtain materials for home repair projects.  Special thanks to Sylvia, Doug and Paul for donating several hours to honor Vets that stopped by our table to chat.  PBYR has great appreciation for Plymouth Home Depot’s efforts  for hosting his yearly event with barbeque grilling and all that they do to help Veterans and their families in Plymouth!!!

PBYR and Community Partners at work

On November 7, 2015 PBYR and community partners helped a 86 year young veteran and his wife move to new housing. This moving event was completed on a Saturday and involved over 45 individuals that worked very hard to assist this family. PBYR send kudos and thanks to all our partners in this effort: PLYMOUTH FIRE DEPARTMENT, WAYZATA FOOTBALL TEAM VOLUNTEERS AND THEIR COACHES, HOME DEPOT and volunteers that provided trucks, trailers, muscles, and food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These community efforts represent the health, spirit and vitality of Plymouth.

PBYR could not have provided this service without the coordination and help from our partners. The service member was very appreciative and stated he was overwhelmed by the number of people that volunteered to help a stranger.

The Sun Sailor recently did a nice story on the move that you can view here.

Below we have some pictures of the hard working volunteers. Please click on the images to make them larger. Again, a huge round of thanks for all the help.

In October 2015 PBYR helped a Veteran who recently lost temporary employment with the repair of his car’s brake light, a Holiday gas card and gave him helpful employment leads. He was very appreciative of PBYR’s efforts.
